Once a month, Kelly dares Jessica to watch a film surrounding the monthly theme. These challenges are meant to scare, or unsettle, Jessica, and broaden her horror horizons.
KELLY:
January is our first Satanic Sabbatical for Spinsters of Horror, which meant that it was a free month for Let's Scare Jessica to Death! I could choose any type of film I wanted, from any genre, with any kind of subject matter (generally speaking). Green Room (2015) is an intense thriller that I enjoyed immensely, with brilliant acting, and a special surprise with the appearance of Patrick Stewart (I know Jess loves him!). Its punk rock roots, grungy atmosphere, and killer Nazis is a great addition to the ever expanding shitstorm of a year (years??). I had to get her to watch this! It may not be timing appropriate for her, but I will challenge her anyways! Enjoy!
JESSICA:
Well, once again this was a film that I built up in my mind to be something that it is not. While the scenario that the band finds themselves in is terrifying -- trapped in a room surrounded by Neo-Nazis and skinheads -- it felt more like a dramatic thriller than a gory horror movie. Which surprised me when I read reviews on this film later on and people mentioned the intense gore of it. I was like - "where was the gore?" I think some of my recent Taboo Terror exploits and some of the choices for last years LSJTD have desensitized me a bit. However, it does depict a horrifying situation because with recent events that we all witnessed in the US, this can, and actually does, happen. That these people and ideologies do exist and are a real threat. I would recommend Green Room as it show that despite what hatred can accomplish it can also be stopped.
