Once a month, Kelly dares Jessica to watch a film surrounding the monthly theme. These challenges are meant to scare, or unsettle, Jessica, and broaden her horror horizons.
KELLY:
To change things up a little I decided to reach out to our listeners and have them choose the movie challenge for Jessica this month. There were some guidelines for movie considerations (plus all movies needed to come to me to be vetted) which were 1) no serial killers and 2) nothing in the Taboo Terrors territory, generally speaking. I got some great and horrific recommendations for Jessica but the winner came from our friends at The Pod and The Pendulum podcast! They chose the 2014 German film, Goodnight Mommy. I personally didn't care a lot for this film though there were a lot of moments/scenes/imagery that did work for me, I just felt like they tried to put a bunch of different films into one. But, I think Jessica will really get something out of this movie so I am excited to see her response! Good luck, Jessica and as always, KEEP THE LIGHTS OFF. Oh, and don't ever have children....
JESSICA:
This movie was brilliant! I had some apprehension going into it because of what I had heard about it and I also knew it was a German film (I tend to find foreign films can really push the envelope). And, it really did deliver. As I got into the film, I kept recalling my theories about what was happening between the Mother and her twin boys. And just when I thought I knew what was going to happen, something minor would occur and flip it on its head! Goodnight Mommy was atmospheric and perplexing. I cringed and actually got scared at various points. Then when it was over I was completely blown away. I feel like it had been a while since a horror film really left me speechless and it became an instant favorite. Thanks go out to the guys at The Pod and the Pendulum for recommending this film for Let's Scare Jessica to Death!
